GIMUN has always organised a number of events apart from the Annual Conference. Usually these activities have been limited to inviting a guest speaker or moderating a panel discussion related to one of the conference’s topics or councils. The interest of local students was surprisingly high and much valuable experience has been gathered. At the time, partnerships have been limited to channelling information in order to have an even better pool of participants for the conference.
Since the acquisition of the Special Consultative Status in 2007 the number and complexity of projects, apart from the simulation, has sharply risen. For the first time GIMUN reached out of Switzerland’s borders and established the US chapter, comprised of several permanent representatives to the United Nations Headquarters in New York. In the meantime the organisation of two study trips with one of our new partners, the Initiative for Intercultural Learning (IFIL) has been a success. Throughout the year several meetings have been held the IHEID, including high ranking guest speakers. GIMUN also co-founded the Swiss Youth-UNA, JUNES, the same year and played an important role in organising the first JUNESMUN in Bern.
For the time being, active participation at UN conferences is limited, given that our mandat is to educate young people about the principles and goals of the United Nations.
