Delegate

Before the conference

Delegates are the most important elements of the GIMUN conference. There are about twenty delegates in each committee. As a delegate you represent a state different from your own. Delegates have more rights than representatives from international organizations or non-governmental organizations since delegates represent the aspect of state sovereignty, they have the right to vote on procedural and substantive matters. Representatives can only vote on procedural matters, but have a crucial impact on the discussion in their committee since they represent the "world opinion". In the preparation phase you have to research your state's (or organization's) position regarding the topic to be discussed in your committee. Based on this you write a position paper, which briefly states your country's point of view on the chosen topics. Delegates may already prepare draft resolutions on their topics in order to speed up the discussion process and to clarify their position on the item under consideration.

During the conference

In coordination with your ambassador, you explain your state's position to other delegates by introducing her- or himself to her/his fellow delegates (and representatives). During formal debate, formal rules of procedure apply. Each delegate is given the right to speak in accordance with these rules. The ultimate goal for the committee being the adoption of a resolution on the topic under discussion. In order to defend a State's (or an organization's) position as effectively as possible, delegates must take an active role in the debate: They give speeches, hold informal meetings, form alliances with other delegates, draft resolutions etc. Delegates must represent their state (or organization) as accurately as possible. The success of a delegate depends strongly on her/his communication skills in order to being able to attract other delegates/representatives which may choose to adopt the other delegate's position.

What former delegates say about GIMUN

"I went to Geneva to experience the so-called Geneva International Model United Nations and I found the GIMUN family! Without expecting anything in particular, I left with a feeling of fulfillment, the pleasant sensation that I exceeded my limits and achieved "growth"... in skills, knowledge, awareness, and most of all in friends, people who share persistence towards goals and the fundamental inspiration of dreams!!!"
Monia Martini from Italy

"GIMUN as a global forum gives people a more advanced insight into political, economical and social pillars of decision making at the highest level. This helps to keep pace with modern trends."
Artem Silonov from Russia

"GIMUN was an incredible experience. It was all about having a great time: trying to last a week sleeping only a few hours each night, consuming enormous amounts of coffee and Redbull, laughing during the work sessions at the weirdest motions and working hard even during coffee breaks in the hope to finally reach an agreement, even after a week still struggling to find your way in the giant Palais des Nations and then hurrying into various evening functions! It’s unbelievable how many friends you make there that later you actually keep in touch with. And it’s also impressing how many people later become addicted to it!"
Igne Grazyte from Australia
