Since July 20th 2007, 15:23 GMT, the GIMUN is by definition an “UN-accredited NGO in Special Consultative Status to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)”. It’s the first time in the history of the UN that a MUN has been granted this status.
What is the Special Consultative Status (SCS)
The ECOSOC grants SCS to NGOs whose programmes are of direct relevance to the aims and purposes of the United Nations. Special consultative status allows NGOs to attend UN conferences, designate UN representatives to all UN-Missions in the world, and circulate statements at ECOSOC and other UN meetings. This is a major achievement for an organization run entirely by university students.
Why did the GIMUN get the Special Consultative Status
The granting of this status represents an acknowledgment of the work the GIMUN has done in educating youth about the UN and its bodies as well as raising awareness regarding issues handled by the UN. Since the establishment of the GIMUN in 2000, students working on a voluntary basis have organized numerous conferences and events for other young people from around the world. The GIMUN successfully promotes inter cultural exchange and provides an opportunity to discuss and formulate findings and initiatives regarding pressing global issues.
How does the Special Consultative Status affect the GIMUN
The SCS allows the GIMUN to further fulfil its role as an international platform for youth and to make their voices heard by decision makers. The GIMUN is looking forward to the challenge of making good use of the SCS in order to give young people’s views a more prominent place in the work of the United Nations.
How does the Special Consultative Status affect you as GIMUNer
Firstly the GIMUN will progressively build up its activities during the year. These activities will include workshops, roundtables, presentations and excursions and depend on your active participation. The GIMUN-Conference will remain the main event of the year. Secondly the GIMUN can now accredit persons for the UN. This means for you that you have chance to visit any UN-Session in any UN-Mission in the world. In order to do so, you have to formally apply with the GIMUN for a pass (see UN-Accreditation).
