Since July 20th 2007, the GIMUN is a "UN-accredited NGO in Special Consultative Status to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)". It's the first time that an MUN was granted this status. This is a major achievement for an organization run entirely by university students.

What is the Special Consultative Status (SCS)?

The ECOSOC grants SCS to NGOs whose programmes are of direct relevance to the aims and purpose of the United Nations. The Special Consultative Status allows NGOs to attend UN conferences, designate UN representatives to all UN missions in the world, and circulate statements at ECOSOC and other UN meetings.

Why did GIMUN get the Special Consultative Status?

The status is an acknowledgment of the work GIMUN has done in educating young people about the UN and its bodies as well as raising awareness of UN issues. Since the establishment of GIMUN in 1999, students working on a voluntary basis have organized numerous conferences and events for other young people from around the world. GIMUN successfully promotes intercultural exchange and provides an opportunity to discuss and formulate findings and initiatives regarding pressing global issues.

How does the Special Consultative Status affect GIMUN?

The SCS allows the GIMUN to further fulfil its role as an international platform for youth and to make their voices heard by decision makers. GIMUN is looking forward to the challenge of making good use of the SCS in order to give young peoples' views a more prominent place in the work of the United Nations.

How does the Special Consultative Status affect you as a GIMUNer?

Firstly, GIMUN will progressively build up its activities during the year. These activities will include workshops, round table discussions, presentations and excursions and depend on your active participation. The MUN Conference will remain the main event of the year.

Secondly, GIMUN can now provide accreditations to the UN. This means that you have the chance to visit any UN session in any UN mission around the world. In order to do so, you have to apply with GIMUN.
